23.8%
Black Household Income Disparity
According to the U.S. Census, "Blacks in poverty was 1.8 times greater than their share among the general population. Blacks represented 13.2% of the total population in the United States, but 23.8% of the poverty population". Because Black households face income disparity at a higher rate, they are less likely to expose their children to international experiences and opportunities. BGP is dedicated to closing this gap through our program initiatives.
5%
Black Students Studying Abroad
According to the Institute of International Education, "about 5 percent of Americans who study abroad are black". This disparity is influenced by many factors including lack of income and lack of knowledge about study abroad opportunities. Since fewer black students have fewer international study opportunities, black students are also less likely to be exposed to career opportunities in the field of international affairs. BGP uses its platform to elevate young black women and expose them to endless opportunities.
